Cerrigydrudion Guide

Cerrigydrudion is a small Welsh village in Conwy County where hot tub cottages offer an excellent base for exploring Snowdonia National Park. The area combines rural Welsh countryside with easy access to mountains, lakes and historic sites.

Accommodation ranges from traditional stone cottages with wood-burning stoves to modern barn conversions. Many properties welcome groups of 6-10 people, making them perfect for family gatherings or friends' weekends away.

Nearby attractions include Zip World Forest (4.5/5 TripAdvisor), Bala Lake Railway (4.5/5) and the stunning Fairy Glen Gorge (4.5/5). The village sits on the historic drovers' road where cattle were once walked from Wales to English markets.

Interestingly, Cerrigydrudion was once visited by Queen Victoria who stopped at the White Lion Royal Hotel in 1889 during her journey through Wales. The area also featured in several scenes of the 1999 film "The Testimony of Taliesin Jones".

Sightseeing

Cerrigydrudion might be small, but it packs a punch when it comes to exploring North Wales. I've found it's a brilliant central spot for day trips across the region while having your own cottage with a hot tub to return to each evening.

Snowdonia National Park is just 15 minutes away, offering some of Britain's most spectacular mountain scenery. Bala Lake (LL23 7SR) is only 10 miles south and opens daily for watersports, fishing and the narrow-gauge railway that runs along its shore.

The medieval town of Ruthin (LL15 1DP) is worth visiting for its 13th-century castle, jail and distinctive black and white timbered buildings. It scores 4.5/5 on TripAdvisor and most visitors spend about 3 hours exploring.

For something different, try the Llangollen Canal where horse-drawn boat trips run daily from 10am-4pm between April and October. The famous Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (LL20 7TY) is just 30 minutes away and has earned its 4.8/5 TripAdvisor rating.

Pet Friendly

Dogs love Cerrigydrudion! The village sits in proper walking country with miles of footpaths straight from your doorstep. We've noticed more cottage owners here welcome pets than in many other UK destinations.

The White Lion Royal Hotel in the village centre allows dogs in the bar area where they serve good pub grub. They even keep dog treats behind the counter - just ask!

Llyn Brenig reservoir (LL21 9TT) has several dog-friendly walking trails ranging from 1-6 miles. The visitor centre has water bowls and the café staff don't mind well-behaved dogs on the outdoor terrace.

If you're bringing your dog, pack a towel specifically for them - the Welsh weather means muddy paws are almost guaranteed! Most cottages with hot tubs have enclosed gardens, but always check the description as fence heights vary.

Top 3 attractions you have to see in Cerrigydrudion

Llyn Brenig Reservoir (LL21 9TT) tops my list. This massive lake has a 10-mile circular walking path, mountain biking trails and fishing permits available daily from the visitor centre (open 9am-5pm). The café serves excellent Welsh cakes and the views across the water are fantastic. One visitor told me: "We hired bikes for £15 each and spent the whole day exploring - best day of our holiday!"

Gwydir Forest Park (LL24 0BY) offers incredible woodland walks and mountain bike trails for all abilities. The Marin Trail is famous among mountain bikers while families enjoy the waymarked paths around Llyn Elsi. Open 24/7 with free entry, though parking costs £5 for the day. A recent visitor commented: "The waterfall walks were stunning even in the rain - and we got to warm up in our hot tub afterwards!"

St Mary's Church (LL21 0RU) might seem an unusual choice, but this 15th-century building contains one of Wales' finest medieval wooden screens and rood lofts. The intricate carvings survived the Reformation when many others were destroyed. It's open daily 10am-4pm with free entry (donations welcome). The churchyard contains fascinating graves including some with Victorian death poetry that's equal parts morbid and fascinating.

Is Cerrigydrudion suitable for a family holiday?

Yes! The village is ideal for families who enjoy outdoor activities. Most cottages with hot tubs are family-friendly with games and DVDs provided. Nearby attractions like GreenWood Family Park (45 minutes away) and Zip World (30 minutes) are perfect for kids of all ages.

What's the best time of year to visit?

Spring and summer offer the best weather for exploring, but autumn brings spectacular colours to the forests. Winter breaks can be magical with frosty landscapes and cosy evenings in your cottage. Hot tubs are especially brilliant on clear winter nights for stargazing - the light pollution here is minimal.

Are there any good places to eat in Cerrigydrudion?

The White Lion Royal Hotel serves traditional pub food with generous portions. For something special, try Machine House in Rossett (30 minutes away) which serves excellent modern British food. There's also a small shop in the village for self-catering supplies.

Do I need a car to stay in Cerrigydrudion?

Yes, a car is essential. Public transport is limited and the best attractions are spread across the region. The good news is that traffic is rarely a problem except during peak summer weekends.

How far is it from Snowdon?

Mount Snowdon is about 35 minutes drive away. The main car parks for climbing Snowdon (Pen-y-Pass and Nant Peris) fill up very early in summer, so aim to arrive before 8am or use the Sherpa bus service.

Can I get groceries delivered to my cottage?

Yes, Tesco and Asda deliver to most cottages in the area. I recommend booking your delivery slot well in advance and doing a shop for your entire stay as smaller local shops have limited ranges.
