St Asaph Guide

St Asaph might be Wales' smallest city, but its cottages with hot tubs offer big relaxation. Located in the Vale of Clwyd, this compact cathedral city provides an excellent base for exploring North Wales while enjoying private hot tub soaks under starry skies.

The area boasts impressive attractions including St Asaph Cathedral (4.5/5 TripAdvisor), the smallest ancient cathedral in Britain. Nearby, you'll find the Welsh Mountain Zoo (4.5/5) and stunning Snowdonia National Park just a 30-minute drive away.

History buffs might be interested to know that William Morgan, who first translated the Bible into Welsh, was Bishop of St Asaph in the 16th century. The city also served as a recording location for several scenes in the 1980s BBC adaptation of "The Chronicles of Narnia".

Cottage options range from cosy one-bedroom retreats perfect for couples to larger farmhouses accommodating groups. Many feature private gardens, countryside views and of course, those all-important hot tubs for evening relaxation after exploring this historic Welsh gem.

Sightseeing

St Asaph packs plenty into its small boundaries. The magnificent St Asaph Cathedral (LL17 0RD, open 8:30am-6:30pm daily) stands as Britain's smallest ancient cathedral but delivers big on history - it's been a place of worship since AD560! It scores 4.5/5 on TripAdvisor with visitors praising its peaceful atmosphere.

Just outside the city, Bodelwyddan Castle (LL18 5YA) offers gorgeous Victorian architecture and 260 acres of parkland. Though the main building is currently closed for renovation, the park remains open and scores 4/5 on TripAdvisor.

I recommend heading to the Denbigh Castle ruins (LL16 3NB, open daily 10am-4pm), just 15 minutes away. These impressive 13th-century fortifications provide fantastic views across the Vale of Clwyd and score 4.5/5 on TripAdvisor.

For something different, check out Rhuddlan Nature Reserve (LL18 5UD), a peaceful wetland habitat where you might spot kingfishers, otters and various wading birds. It's free to enter and perfect for morning walks before returning for a hot tub session!

Pet Friendly

St Asaph welcomes four-legged visitors with open arms! Many local cottages accept dogs, but always check specific pet policies before booking. We've found most charge around £20-£30 per dog per stay.

The Clwydian Range, just east of St Asaph, offers miles of dog-friendly walking trails. Loggerheads Country Park (CH7 5LH) is particularly good with marked paths and the dog-friendly Caffi Florence where your pet can join you for refreshments.

In St Asaph itself, The White House pub (LL17 0RW) welcomes dogs in its bar area and garden, serving good pub grub. They even provide water bowls and treats! For supplies, Pets Pantry (LL17 0LH) stocks everything from premium food to toys.

Top tip: The beaches at Rhyl and Prestatyn (15 minutes drive) have seasonal dog restrictions, but Talacre Beach allows dogs year-round - perfect for sandy hot tub-free adventures!

Top 3 attractions you have to see in St Asaph

St Asaph Cathedral (LL17 0RD) isn't just the smallest ancient cathedral in Britain - it's a living piece of Welsh history. The current building dates from the 13th century but stands on a site used for worship since AD560. Inside, you'll find the William Morgan Bible - the first complete translation into Welsh. The acoustics are incredible, so try to catch one of their regular choir performances. One visitor wrote: "Such a beautiful cathedral with so much history. The staff were really knowledgeable and friendly."

The River Elwy offers beautiful riverside walks with well-maintained paths suitable for all abilities. The Elwy Valley Walk starts near the cathedral and follows the river through woodland and meadows. In spring, the banks burst with wildflowers and you might spot kingfishers darting across the water. Pack a picnic and make a day of it before heading back for a hot tub soak. Local walker John says: "We walk here weekly and always see something new - otters if you're lucky!"

Tweedmill Shopping Outlet (LL17 0UY) might seem an unusual recommendation, but this converted mill houses over 50 stores selling Welsh crafts, clothing and food products. The on-site restaurant serves excellent Welsh cakes and bara brith. They often host craft demonstrations and seasonal events. TripAdvisor gives it 4/5, with one reviewer noting: "Much more than just shopping - it's a proper Welsh experience with great local products."

Is St Asaph worth visiting?

Absolutely! Despite being Wales' smallest city, St Asaph offers a perfect base for exploring North Wales. The cathedral alone justifies a visit, but you're also within easy reach of Snowdonia, beaches and historic sites. Plus, returning to a hot tub cottage after a day exploring makes it even more worthwhile.

When is the best time to visit St Asaph?

Summer (June-August) brings the best weather and longer days for exploring. However, May and September offer fewer crowds while still having decent weather. The St Asaph Festival in September features music and arts events throughout the city.

Do I need a car in St Asaph?

While the city center is walkable, a car is recommended to properly explore the surrounding area. Public transport exists but is limited, especially to rural attractions. Most hot tub cottages are in countryside locations requiring a vehicle.

Are there good restaurants in St Asaph?

Yes! Jacob's Ladder (LL17 0RD) serves excellent modern British cuisine using local ingredients. The White House (LL17 0RW) offers quality pub food, while Con Amici (LL17 0LH) provides authentic Italian dishes. For a special meal, The Kinmel Arms in nearby Abergele (LL22 9AS) has won numerous awards.

What's the weather like in St Asaph?

North Wales has a temperate climate. Summer temperatures average 15-20°C (59-68°F), while winters typically range from 3-8°C (37-46°F). Rainfall is fairly consistent year-round, so pack waterproofs regardless of season! The good news? Your hot tub will be enjoyable whatever the weather.

Can I bring children to St Asaph?

St Asaph is very family-friendly. Nearby attractions like Welsh Mountain Zoo (CH8 9LE) and Rhyl Beach are perfect for kids. Many cottages offer family facilities like games and enclosed gardens. GreenWood Family Park (LL55 3AD) is about 40 minutes away and consistently rated North Wales' best family attraction.
